Cats walk directly on their toes. Almost all cats' claws are sheathed with the skin and fur around the toe pads. It prevents the claws from getting blunt. The claws on the front paws are always sharper than those on the hind legs. Most cats have 5 claws on the front paws and 4 on the rear. (wikipedia)
